How a system tells you it is on the brink
Heating equipment rarely quits without warning. The clues are things a household learns to live with: a bang or rattle when the burners light, a squeal from the blower, a room at the far end of the house that never gets comfortable, a heat cycle that seems to run all evening, or a bill that climbs while the thermostat setting stays put.
Age counts too. A system that has been in a closet or basement for many winters has been through thousands of start-ups, and the cost of each repair starts to compete with the cost of a new unit. Cracked or rusted parts, soot around the unit and a pilot or igniter that needs constant attention all say the same thing.
A unit that is merely old and a unit that is unsafe are different problems, and sorting them out is the first job of the visit.
